About us

Amman Academy

Sometimes referred to as the "Jungle School"

Amman Academy commenced operation in July, 2008 on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. It was previously known as Sekolah Buin Batu. The school specifically serves the dependants of employees and contractors of PT Aman Mineral Nusa Tenggara’s vast copper and gold mine here, known as the Batu Hijau Project.

Although the school is relatively new, it is the amalgamation of two pre-existing schools – Sekolah Nasional Buin Batu (SNBB) and Batu Hijau International School (BHIS). SNBB was established on 17th January 2000 in Townsite and BHIS in 1998 in Mataram. The staff primarily consists of Indonesian members complemented by expatriate teachers from Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, and the USA.

Mission

Head of School

JOHN DINO

Amman Academy is a distinctive IB World School in a remarkable part of Indonesia, serving families who are building ambitious futures. Our work mirrors that ambition. We hold high standards. We expect effort. We believe young people are capable of far more than they often realize, especially when they are surrounded by adults who combine belief, skill, and consistency.

My background is unusual for a Head of School. I began as a chemical engineer. Systems, precision, and measurable growth matter to me. Later, as a Head of School in the United States and China, I led communities that combined strong culture with strong outcomes, including sustained academic growth and global recognition.

What I have learned is simple:

Clarity matters.

Culture matters.

Consistency matters.

And relationships are not separate from rigor; they are the edge that makes it all work.

At Amman Academy, culture is not a poster on the wall. It is visible in how teachers greet students in the morning, how disagreements are handled in a classroom discussion, how feedback is given, and how expectations are upheld with both firmness and care.

Our teachers are the foundation of that culture.

They are not deliverers of content; they are designers of learning and stewards of character. They collaborate, reflect, and refine. They understand that strong relationships and strong instruction are inseparable. They create classrooms where students feel known, and where being known comes with being challenged.

We focus on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well:

  • Teaching that is intellectually demanding and inquiry-driven.
  • Literacy and numeracy embedded across disciplines.
  • A culture where students are known, not just by name, but by strengths, needs, and aspirations.
  • Expectations that are clear, fair, and consistently upheld.

We are not chasing trends or optics. We are building substance through small, disciplined actions repeated daily. Over time, those actions compound. Momentum builds. Confidence grows from competence.

Our students deserve teachers who model curiosity.

They deserve structure and kindness.

They deserve to be stretched, academically and socially.

And they deserve a community where respect is practiced, not just preached.

If you visit Amman Academy, you will see engaged classrooms and purposeful energy. You will see educators who take their craft seriously and relationships seriously. You will see a school that understands that culture and excellence are not competing priorities; they sharpen each other.

Thank you for trusting us with your children.
