Position Overview
Amman Academy is seeking an energetic, highly organized, and student-centered Physical Education Teacher / Athletic Director to help strengthen both daily physical education instruction and the broader athletics culture of the school.
This is a unique hybrid role. The successful candidate will teach Physical Education across assigned year levels while also leading the development of a schoolwide athletics program that reflects Amman Academy’s commitment to student wellbeing, teamwork, personal growth, competitive spirit, and community pride.
The ideal candidate is more than a coach or PE teacher. They are a builder of programs, a positive culture-setter, and a practical leader who can organize teams, develop systems, support coaches, communicate clearly with families, and create meaningful opportunities for students to participate, compete, lead, and grow.
Amman Academy is located in a unique townsite setting on the island of Sumbawa, serving the children of Amman Mineral employees and the surrounding school community. The role requires adaptability, initiative, resilience, and a genuine willingness to contribute to school life beyond the classroom.
Key Responsibilities
1. Physical Education Teaching
The PE Teacher will provide engaging, developmentally appropriate, and standards-aligned physical education instruction that promotes lifelong fitness, health, movement skills, teamwork, and confidence.
Responsibilities include:
- Plan and deliver high-quality PE lessons aligned with the philosophy of the IB and the needs of an English-medium, multilingual student population.
- Teach students appropriate movement skills, physical literacy, sportsmanship, teamwork, strategy, and personal fitness habits.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and positive PE environment where all students can participate successfully.
- Differentiate instruction for students with varying levels of skill, confidence, English proficiency, physical ability, and prior experience.
- Use clear learning objectives, routines, modeling, active practice, feedback, and reflection to support student growth.
- Assess student progress using appropriate formative and summative assessment practices.
- Reinforce student wellbeing, resilience, healthy competition, and responsible decision-making.
- Maintain appropriate supervision, safety practices, and risk management during PE lessons and activities.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, coordinators, and school leadership to support whole-child development.
2. Athletic Program Leadership
As Athletic Director, the candidate will lead the development, organization, and improvement of Amman Academy’s athletics program.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop a clear vision and yearly plan for school athletics aligned with Amman Academy’s values and strategic goals.
- Build a positive athletics culture rooted in participation, commitment, school pride, sportsmanship, discipline, and student growth.
- Coordinate school sports teams, training schedules, competitions, tournaments, fixtures, and special athletic events.
- Support the development of seasonal sports offerings based on student interest, staffing capacity, facilities, and competitive opportunities.
- Recruit, guide, and support teacher-coaches and external coaches as needed.
- Establish clear expectations for coaches, student-athletes, parents, and spectators.
- Create systems for team selection, practice attendance, behavior expectations, uniforms, equipment, communication, and travel.
- Coordinate with school leadership, operations, transportation, security, and facilities teams to ensure safe and smooth athletic events.
- Develop opportunities for both competitive athletics and broad student participation.
- Help build relationships with other schools and organizations to create meaningful competition opportunities.
- Promote athletics as an important part of student identity, wellbeing, leadership, and school community.
3. Student Development and School Culture
The successful candidate will use athletics and PE as tools for character development, belonging, leadership, and resilience.
Responsibilities include:
- Model and teach sportsmanship, teamwork, humility, perseverance, respect, and healthy competition.
- Support students in understanding the connection between effort, discipline, preparation, and improvement.
- Create leadership opportunities for students through athletics, house events, sports days, team captain roles, and service opportunities.
- Work proactively with students who need additional encouragement, structure, or behavioral support.
- Help create a visible and positive athletics presence in the life of the school.
- Celebrate student growth and achievement in ways that are inclusive and motivating.
- Support schoolwide events, assemblies, spirit activities, and community-building initiatives.
4. Program Systems, Communication, and Administration
The Athletic Director portion of the role requires strong organization, follow-through, and communication.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain accurate schedules, rosters, equipment inventories, participation records, and event plans.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with students, parents, teachers, coaches, and school leadership.
- Prepare parent communication related to teams, competitions, events, expectations, and logistics.
- Ensure appropriate supervision, permissions, risk assessments, and emergency planning for athletic activities.
- Coordinate uniforms, equipment needs, facility use, and storage systems.
- Support budgeting and purchasing recommendations for athletics and PE.
- Track participation, program growth, student interest, and athletic development over time.
- Provide periodic updates to school leadership on athletics program progress, needs, risks, and opportunities.
5. IB Alignment and Professional Collaboration
As an IB World School, Amman Academy expects all teachers and program leaders to support inquiry, reflection, student agency, and holistic learning.
Responsibilities include:
- Align PE and athletics with the IB Learner Profile, Approaches to Learning, and whole-child development.
- Support students in reflecting on personal growth, teamwork, leadership, and wellbeing.
- Collaborate with PYP, MYP, and DP colleagues where athletics, wellness, service, CAS, advisory, and student leadership connect.
- Participate actively in professional learning, staff meetings, curriculum planning, and school improvement initiatives.
- Contribute positively to a collaborative professional culture.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to support school needs in a growing and developing IB environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field.
- Valid teaching certification or professional teaching qualification.
- Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching, coaching, or athletics-related experience.
- Demonstrated experience coaching school sports or leading athletic programs.
- Strong understanding of student safety, supervision, injury prevention, and age-appropriate physical development.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, coaches, and school leadership.
- Fluency in English or strong professional English communication skills.
- Commitment to child safeguarding and student wellbeing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an IB school, international school, or English-medium school setting.
- Experience teaching PE across multiple age levels.
- Experience developing or improving a school athletics program.
- Experience organizing tournaments, fixtures, sports days, house competitions, or interschool events.
- Experience supporting both competitive and inclusive participation-based athletics.
- First aid, CPR, lifeguarding, athletic training, or sports safety certification.
- Experience working with multilingual learners.
- Experience living or working in a remote, residential, island, or company-town setting.

Reporting Line
The Physical Education Teacher / Athletic Director reports to the appropriate Principal and the Head of School, with regular collaboration across school leadership, operations, facilities, transportation, and student support teams.
