Middle Years Programme

About MYP
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is a challenging and holistic educational framework designed for students aged 11 to 16 years. It supports students during a critical phase of personal, social, and intellectual development, helping them make meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world around them.
At the heart of the MYP is the belief that students learn best when they are encouraged to inquire, think critically, and reflect. The programme empowers learners to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand the importance of international-mindedness and intercultural understanding.
A Concept-Driven, Inquiry-Based Curriculum
The MYP curriculum is concept-driven, moving beyond the memorisation of facts to develop deep understanding. Learning is organised around key and related concepts and explored through global contexts, allowing students to see the relevance of their learning in local, national, and global settings.
Students engage in inquiry-based learning where they ask questions, investigate real-world issues, collaborate with peers, and reflect on their learning process. This approach encourages curiosity, creativity, and independent thinking while helping students develop strong academic foundations.
Broad and Balanced Subject Groups
The MYP offers a broad and balanced curriculum through eight subject groups:
- Language and Literature
- Language Acquisition
- Individuals and Societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- Arts
- Physical and Health Education
- Design
This structure ensures that students develop a wide range of skills and knowledge, while also allowing them to discover and nurture their individual strengths and interests.
Assessment for Learning
Assessment in the MYP is criterion-related and focuses on supporting learning rather than simply measuring performance. Students receive regular feedback that helps them understand their strengths, identify areas for growth, and take ownership of their learning journey.
Developing the Whole Child
The MYP places strong emphasis on the development of the whole learner. Students are encouraged to grow not only academically, but also socially, emotionally, and ethically. The programme explicitly supports the development of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, including:
- Thinking skills
- Communication skills
- Social skills
- Self-management skills
- Research skills
These transferable skills equip students with the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.
The IB Middle Years Programme encourages students to make meaningful connections between their learning and the real world through Global Contexts, Service as Action, and the Personal Project.
Global Contexts provide a real-world lens for learning. They help students understand how their studies relate to local, national, and global issues, encouraging them to explore identity, culture, sustainability, fairness, innovation, and global relationships in authentic and relevant ways.
Service as Action enables students to apply their learning beyond the classroom. Through meaningful action and community engagement, students develop empathy, responsibility, and a commitment to making a positive difference. These experiences help students grow as reflective, caring, and principled individuals.
The Personal Project, completed in the final year of the MYP, is a student-led independent inquiry based on personal interests and passions. It allows students to demonstrate the skills they have developed throughout the programme, including research, planning, reflection, and self-management, while celebrating creativity, initiative, and personal growth.

Preparing Students for the Future
The IB MYP provides an excellent foundation for further education, including the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or other international and national pathways. More importantly, it prepares students to become confident, reflective, and principled individuals who are ready to thrive in an ever-changing world. By fostering curiosity, resilience, and global awareness, the IB Middle Years Programme nurtures young people who are prepared not just for the next stage of their education, but for life.
